Effects of Solid Suspended Particles on Fish Species

Suspended solids are tiny particles that remain in water and act as a colloid. These suspended solids are the waste water compounds generated by many aquaculture systems and have negative impacts on the aquatic environment. Aquaculture system are not suitable for some rare species like Salmon because both species require clean and cold water for their proper growth but suspended solids may reduce their growth rate. Generally, Salmon species do not grow properly in recycled water just because of harmful suspended solids present in recycled water. The study was mainly conducted for saving the rarely found species of Salmonids and also highlighted all the negative effects that were produced by the increased level of suspended solids. These suspended solids can directly affect health of fish.
The European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) reported five ways that affect Salmonid Species in aquaculture systems that includes:
Due to the presence of suspended solids, fish swimming can be affected directly.
Suspended solids can also reduce the growth rate of Salmon species.
Suspended solids also increase the rate of mortality and provide resistance to disease.
Successful development of fish eggs may also be affected by solid waste.
Natural movement of fish might change in next generation due to migration from natural system to aquaculture systems.
The above mentioned effects on Salmonids depend on the water quality criteria provided by aquaculture communities. Moreover, it is necessary to follow the recommendations given by EIFAC for the protection of Salmon species which is rarely found.
